We’re pleased to announce that Realtime Trains has reached an agreement with GB Railfreight to release the allocations of their locomotives on our service. This marks the first new data sourced externally on Realtime Trains.
Since Realtime Trains launched in 2012, one of the most commonly requested features, from both informed passengers and enthusiasts, has been to provide more details about the trains that operate on a particular service. Freight services are some of the most sensitive in the rail network’s data environment and GB Railfreight were the first operator to request their services to be made available in the clear. We are therefore pleased that GBRf have agreed to make the small step, but equally giant leap for the industry as a whole, to release their service allocations.
This data adds another layer into an ongoing workstream at Realtime Trains around performance analysis and feeds into our ongoing work in continually improving train reporting on our platform. Our latest improvements to train reporting are now on trial internally and we will be making this available in the coming weeks on the site.
While the release of this data does result in Realtime Trains no longer solely being powered by open data sources or those which we have developed internally, we are hopeful that the industry will move forward and release service consist and allocation data on a wider basis in time.
